    (archived) Cosmetology/Barbering

    Students learn techniques and theory of hair cutting, hair styling, shaving, hair removal, facials, nail enhancements, pedicures, manicures, scalp and hair treatments, as well as specialized coloring and chemical texture services. They study diseases and disorders of the skin, nails, hair and scalp. Students learn about disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures. They learn to use implements, tools and equipment for the cosmetologist/barber. Students study client and salon safety, and basics of running a business with salon management concepts.

    Program Objectives
    Competencies for Cosmetology/Barbering ensure that students are prepared to enter the service industry and know the skills needed to succeed these skills include:

    • Proficiency in haircutting, hairstyling, hair coloring, and chemical texture services, scalp and hair treatments.
    • Competency in the required procedures of hair removal, and facials.
    • Being proficient in recognizing diseases and disorders of the skin, nails, and scalp.
    • Becoming competent in nail enhancements, pedicures, and manicures.
    • Reaching proficiency in the use of the proper tools and implements for the cosmetologist/barber.
    • Proficient in disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures as well as the procedures required for client and salon safety.
    • Competency in business and salon management fundamentals.
    • Master skills required for State Board regulations and guidelines.
    • Acquire all knowledge and skills needed to be prepared to take and pass State Board written and practical examinations.

    Admission Requirements:

    Courses can not be taken as individual courses. Students must enroll in the program.

    • All students must commit to Block 1 – 9:00 to 2:00 pm OR Block 2 – 3:00 to 8:00 pm (CAPACITY: 20 STUDENTS PER BLOCK)
    • Adult Students must provide a high school transcript showing a C or better in 8th grade or higher math and reading, and/or take the TABE assessment showing an 8 grade level in reading and math.
    • High school students must be in at least the 11th grade.
    Math & English Levels: 8th grade or higher math and reading levels .
    Occupation & Licensure Requirements:

    Students must have their Cosmetology Program Kit, and MindTap Access Code on the first day of class.

  • What are some examples of skills I will learn?

    Cosmetology skills and theory

    Learn techniques and theory of hair cutting, hair styling, shaving, hair removal, facials, nail enhancements, pedicures, manicures, scalp and hair treatments, as well as specialized coloring and chemical texture services.

    Students study about diseases and disorders of the skin, nails, hair and scalp. They also learn disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures.

    Customer service and soft skills

    Learn professional communication and customer services skills including how to handle difficult clients, manage business problems that may arise and other conflict resolution skills.

    Students also will learn about client and salon safety, and basics of running a business with salon management concepts.

    Prepare for State Board Exams

    Students will receive personalized instruction to help them adequately prepare to pass their State Board Exams and earn their license. Instructors will assist them with specialized theory instruction to help map out a study plan.

    Students will take mock exams to familiarize themselves with the procedures that will be performed during the licensing exams.
