Tooele Technical College Selects 2023 Student of Year

Tooele Technical College selected Derek Darcy as the 2023 Student of the Year (SOTY). Derek recently completed the Cybersecurity Pro program.

In October of 2020 Darcy was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease. Shortly after his diagnosis, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Working as a custodial supervisor in a hospital meant working extra hours to cover shifts. It didn’t take long for him to realize that he would not be able to maintain this position long-term. It was time for a career change.

Darcy always had a passion for IT, and had previous experience and recognition from managers in the IT industry. In December 2020, the payroll company for his employer was hit with ransomware. This situation interested Derek and he felt that he wanted to learn how help companies fight against ransom wear and other security issues.

“I began looking into Cybersecurity training and education. I looked at boot camps, traditional colleges and universities as well as community colleges. I also contacted Tooele Technical College,” Darcy said.

As a father of 3 and a husband, Darcy didn’t have the luxury of quitting his job to focus on school. Therefore, he needed training that could work within his current time constraints. Each educational option, including online training, had pros and cons. After he weighed his options he chose Tooele Technical College.

Darcy said, “I chose Tooele Tech because of flexibility, cost, and small class sizes. I can work my school schedule around my family obligations. I was fortunate enough to qualify for not only a grant, but the re-engagement scholarship so most of my program expenses are covered. Without financial burdens I am able to focus on school. My instructors are patient and always available to answer questions.”

The Student of the Year program was created in 2015 to highlight students at the technical colleges around the state. The students serve as ambassadors for the school and share their story and college experiences with community leaders, organizations and even legislators.

Tooele Tech changed their program a little through the years and now instead of having individual students apply for SOTY they select department Students of the Year who are nominated by instructors. These 5 department nominees compete for the college SOTY. All of the department Students’ of the Year are honored and given a chance to represent the college and share their experiences.

The students who will represent their department areas for 2022 are Derek Darcy (Business and Information Technologies), Aubrey Whittle (Healthcare), Quinn Lucas (Manufacturing), Alivia Brownell (Service Industries- Cosmetology/Nails) and Brandon Redmond (Transportation).

Tooele Tech held their Student Champions Gala on November 9, 2022. Dinner was served and each student was introduced and honored. The department SOTY’s received $100, a crystal engraved award and a few other gifts, the Tooele Technical College SOTY received an additional $1000, a plaque and will be serving as the main Tooele Tech Student Ambassador, however the college will also be highlighting all of SOTY from each departments throughout the year. The student’s families, staff, faculty, board members and various community leaders were in attendance at the Gala.

Tooele Technical College Awards Building Expansion Project Contract to Jacobsen Construction

Tooele, Utah –Tooele Technical College awarded their building expansion project to Jacobsen Construction.  The college has been working with Method Studios on the architecture and design of the building, and the selection of a general contractor is another significant milestone on the path to project completion.

Jacobsen Construction is a Salt Lake City-based commercial builder that has been in Utah since 1922. They have won “Best in State” honors in the construction category seven times in the past eight years and have extensive experience completing projects on nearly every college campus in Utah.

“More and more people are taking notice of the outstanding education opportunities offered by Tooele Tech, and this project will be a key step in ensuring the college can successfully meet the growing demand for its services,” said Jacobsen Construction Project Executive Jim Cavey. “Many of our project leaders for this expansion live here in Tooele County and have deep roots here, so we feel especially excited to strengthen our very own community with this impactful project. We’re looking forward to doing our part to help Tooele Tech achieve its long-term vision for better serving students as enrollment continues to increase.”

Tooele Tech has grown significantly since their current building was dedicated in 2013. In order to accommodate the larger number of students, it has become necessary to expand their building and campus. With this construction project, the college will be doubling the instruction space used to teach valuable technical skills. The addition will not only expand instructional space for existing programs but also make it possible to start new programs to satisfy local workforce needs.

Tooele Tech President Paul Hacking said, “The construction of this building expansion will strengthen our ability to serve additional students in a more professional manner. It will also provide more space for additional equipment that will more closely resemble what students will find in the workplace. Our college community is forever grateful to those who helped make it possible for us to take this next giant step in our evolution. This expansion will elevate the lives of more students, their families and improve the overall wellbeing of our community.”

During the 2022 legislative session Tooele Tech received an appropriation from the Utah State Legislature of $24.7 million to expand the current campus. The State of Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management (DFCM) is overseeing the construction project, which includes a plan to allow enrolled students to still attend school during the building process.

Construction on the expansion is anticipated to begin in March of 2023 and will last approximately 18 months.

Tooele Technical College and Utah’s Technical College community receives generous donation from Aftermarket Solutions (AMS)

TOOELE, Utah: Daimler subsidiary, Aftermarket Solutions (formerly Detroit Diesel Remanufacturing) has made a generous in-kind donation of 24 heavy truck differentials, valued over $6,000 each, to Tooele Technical College (Tooele Tech).  The donation was made official in August at AMS’s Tooele facility.  This is a huge gesture in support of technical education in Utah and it is intended to be shared with the other 8 technical colleges in the state.  Tooele Technical College will manage the allocation of the donation to the state’s other technical institutions.

Producing and maintaining a skilled and strong labor market by providing quality training on state-of-the-art equipment is critical for employers in the diesel technician industry. Partnerships between industry and technical education, such as the relationship between Tooele Tech and AMS, provide vital feedback on industry needs and trends as guidance to curriculum. They also assist with financial and equipment support.  This equipment donation helps us raise the caliber of the training experience while making it accessible to a greater number of students throughout the technical education system in Utah.  Additionally, “This partnership sets our students up for success by ensuring that our Diesel Technician pathway and curriculum is as industry-current as it can be.  Because of partners like AMS, our graduates who are entering the workforce are prepared to perform well in real-world applications from day-one on the job”, said Gary Snow, Lead Heavy Duty Diesel Technician Instructor at Tooele Technical College.

Paul Hacking, President of Tooele Technical College expressed excitement for the latest of a long line of contributions under this partnership. He said, “Tooele Technical College believes and has proven that all students are needed to keep Utah’s economy robust, both those in skilled trades and those seeking four-year degrees. The key is for our society to value traditional degree programs and technical education equally. We should encourage students to pursue education in whatever path aligns the best with their interests, aptitudes and abilities. Our College is very grateful for this ongoing  partnership, as it will make it possible for even more students to have the opportunity to practice on the latest equipment and perhaps even more important, our students knowing their program is supported by  leading employers in the diesel industry. I am extremely grateful the leadership of AMS have recognized the critical role they have in shaping and preparing the next generation of skilled workers in Utah and beyond.  Their actions will benefit not only our students, but their families and the overall quality of the communities in which they live for years to come.”

President of AMS, Brian Lewallen commented, “We are committed to supporting Utah’s Tech-Ed institutions as a key partner in developing a skilled, sustained workforce. Providing quality trades education is imperative to sustaining our way of life as well as our competitive advantage now and into the future.  We are proud to stand behind institutions of excellence such as Tooele Technical College, who lead the way in ensuring that our up-and- coming workers are highly skilled, qualified, and ready to meet the demand we are facing as an industry.”

Detroit Diesel was acquired by Daimler-Chrysler in 2000, and expanded its design and manufacturing scope beyond engines as a subsidiary of Daimler in 2011.  They are known as Aftermarket Solutions (AMS) today and are the industry-leading original equipment manufacturer of state-of-the-art engines, axles and transmissions specifically designed for integrated, optimized performance and efficiency inside Freightliner and Western Star Trucks, supported by a distribution network of over 800 locations in North America.  Tooele Technical College was founded in 2009 as the latest addition to the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE), and is dedicated to providing high-demand technical job skills training and certifications in multiple industries, including heavy-duty diesel mechanics.

Tooele Tech Re-launches Police Academy

A career in law enforcement could be in the future for Tooele residents and others who choose to take advantage of the Police Academy at Tooele Technical College. Tooele County law enforcement officials are excited to continue to support the program, which assists in filling job vacancies locally.  Having opportunities for people to become certified and trained within the law enforcement profession will not only help locally but state-wide.

Departments throughout Tooele County have direct involvement with the satellite academy and help mentor students. Cadets can be hired and sponsored through the program, which will also benefit the departments in onboarding new officers.

It is anticipated that the local departments will have a more diverse pool of applicants in the near future because of the convenient location and possibilities for advancements.

The Police Academy program will have two certifications or “blocks.”  The Special Function Officer (SFO) and the Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). Each block has a certification; potential students can choose to complete one or both certifications. Jobs vary with each level.

This program is a fully functioning police academy offering day classes Monday through Friday, 25-hours per week. Classes begin at 5:00 pm concluding at 10:00 pm.

Students wishing to enter the program will need to complete an application found at https://post.utah.gov/

The NPOST exam, which is required as part of the application can be scheduled with Tooele Tech.  It is offered on campus by appointment; contact the testing center for details. At the beginning of the program/course cadets will be assessed on the initial Physical Training Standards and are expected to meet the Utah Police Academy suggested physical fitness entrance standards.

The new Director of Tooele Tech’s Police Academy is no stranger to law enforcement. His background includes 21 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where he retired as a high ranking agent.
