Services to Students with Disabilities

The Tooele Tech facility was built in 2013 and meets the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards. Tooele Tech has ADA accessible parking, curb ramps, entrance and exit points, and emergency assembly areas. Restrooms and drinking fountains are ADA accessible and the facility has elevator access to second floor (an emergency evacuation sled is available for physically disabled staff and students). In addition, the facility was designed with extra wide hallways, large meeting areas and each classroom and lab is ADA accessible. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), adult students with qualifying physical and intellectual disabilities may apply to the College to receive reasonable accommodations by consulting with the ADA Coordinator located in the Student Services office. Documentation, as indicated in the Request for Accommodations application, is required.

What is a reasonable accommodation? For purposes of reasonable accommodation, a student or applicant with a disability is a person who has learning, physical or psychological impairment which limits one or more major life activities such as walking, seeing, speaking, learning, or working. Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to the tasks, environment or to the way things are usually done that enable individuals with disabilities to have an equal opportunity to participate in an academic program. Tooele Tech is responsible for providing necessary accommodations when a student discloses a disability. Tooele Tech is required to make reasonable adjustments or modifications and to provide auxiliary aids and services for students with disabilities, unless to do so would fundamentally alter the nature of the programs or result in an undue burden. Providing accommodations do not compromise the essential elements of a course or curriculum; nor do they weaken the academic standards or integrity of a course. Accommodations simply provide an alternative way to accomplish the course requirements by eliminating or reducing disability-related barriers. They provide a level playing field, not an unfair advantage.

What is the process to request a reasonable accommodation?

  • Review the Request for Accommodations application (click here)
  • Gather your documentation, ensuing it contains your diagnosis and list of recommended accommodations
  • Make an appointment to meet with the ADA Coordinator by calling 435-248-1800

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain an application for ADA accommodations?

The ADA application can be found here.  You can also go to student services for assistance.

WHAT DOES THE APPLICATION PROCESS REQUIRE OF ME?

You will be required to provide information about how your disability impacts your functioning in an education setting. In most situations, you will be referred to an ADA counselor to discuss needs and to arrange accommodations.

WHAT TYPE OF DOCUMENTATION WOULD BE HELPFUL TO DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY?

Documentation needs to help Tooele Tech to understand the nature of your disability.  IEPs from high school, evaluations from Vocational Rehabilitation, and letters from medical professionals are some examples but medical documentation from a qualifying medical provider within 3 years of application is required.

WHO DO I CALL ABOUT THE ADA SERVICES THAT TOOELE TECH PROVIDES?

Please call Tricia Walker at 435-248-1840.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR EVALUATIONS OR RE-EVALUATIONS OF MY DISABILITY?

The student is responsible for providing verification of disability and to pay for evaluations. If a student is working with a rehabilitation agency, he/she should request that the information regarding diagnosis, functional limitations and appropriate recommendations for accommodations be provided, if possible, through that agency.

WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES MIGHT BE OFFERED TO STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES?

A variety of services appropriate for qualifying disabilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Appropriate classroom adaptations or accommodations
  • Readers
  • Testing accommodations
  • Audio textbooks
  • Braille or large print materials
  • Study skills, test-taking strategy, and learning style classes
  • Specialized software or applications
  • Campus counseling and referral to community services
  • Other services

WHAT SERVICES ARE NOT PROVIDED UNDER ADA ACCOMMODATIONS?

  • Personal tutors
  • Personal aides
  • Transportation
  • Computers or software for off campus use

WHO DO I TALK TO IF I THINK I AM BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST?

If you feel that you are being discriminated against, for any reason, and you cannot resolve your concerns immediately through self-advocacy in your training environment, you are encouraged to see a member of the College Advising Team in Student Services. You can ask to see the first advisor available to review your concerns and talk about what to do. If your informal efforts to resolve your concerns are not working out, you can talk to your Advisor about the Student Grievance Policy. You may prefer to talk to a Director of Programs (in the Training Division) or the Director of Student Services about your concerns. Students may also wish to contact the Office of Civil Rights if they cannot resolve their concerns on campus.
