Competency-Based Education Sets Tooele Tech Apart…It’s Our Difference

In a world where most of us are balancing multiple priorities—like jobs, family, and personal lives—many working adults no longer have the time to attend school; especially a traditional course-based system of higher education. Competency-based programs offer a more flexible learning environment that allows high school students, adults, and/or working professionals to earn a certificate while moving at their own pace.

At Tooele Tech, competency-based learning gives you a chance to move past what you already know and focus on what you need to learn. With a competency-based education model, you can move at your own pace, meaning go as fast as you want through your program. If you need to slow down to learn new skills you can as long as you keep the scheduled pace of your course.  

Programs are broken down into courses, and courses are broken down into modules or competencies.  In other words, you work on smaller components of your larger learning goal and are evaluated on your individual competency.  Once you have mastered the competency, you move on to the next module.

• Efficient: We don’t waste your time. You focus on learning the material that’s new to you, brush up on familiar topics where you need a refresher, and cruise through subjects you know well.
• Flexible: Study whenever and wherever you want. Schedule time for hands-on learning in the lab, yet still have the flexibility to complete book work in the classroom or at home. 
• Individualized: Every student is different. The Tooele Tech learning experience is built around you, not us.
• Supportive: Tooele Tech’s advising and enrollment teams are available to answer questions and concerns. Small classes allow instructors to provide one-on-one, hands-on instruction in the lab. Fellow students are typically available to mentor in the classroom as well.
