A residential electrician is a skilled and licensed professional who works in residential buildings to install, maintain, inspect and repair wiring and electrical systems and components. Depending on level of experience and supervisory duties, a residential electrician may also lead teams of workers and plan and diagram electrical projects.

A commercial electrician is a trained and licensed electrician who focuses on wiring and electrical systems in commercial buildings rather than residential buildings. These electricians work with bigger systems, in large buildings like shopping malls, office buildings, restaurants, government buildings and high rises. Many aspects of the job and training are similar to those of residential electricians, but there are also some important differences to consider when choosing your future electrical career.

    Electricians are highly paid, skilled craftsmen that are responsible for electrical distribution systems. All buildings have an electrical system installed during construction and maintained subsequently by electricians. This Tooele Tech program will satisfy the educational requirements to take the State Journeyman Exam and gives students the competitive edge needed to move ahead in this growing industry. The program in composed of two parts; classroom/lab instruction and on-the-job training. Students will receive hands-on experience to develop safe working habits. Students become familiar with using different types of hand and power tools to run and protect wiring, making calculations using Ohm’s law, and making sure all electrical systems operate safely and reliable. By the end of the first year, students should be working at least part-time for an electrical company and be supervised by a Master or Journeyman Electrician.

    (archived) Electrical Apprenticeship

    Admission Requirements:

    Electrician Apprentice program students must work at least part-time for an electrical company, and be supervised by a Master or Journeyman Electrician. However, unemployed first year students may register for courses if there is space available.

    Obtain Apprentice Electrician License (see application for apprentice electrician license below). This license must be obtained before being admitted to the second course.

    TABE test results of 10th grade reading and math levels required.

    Math & English Levels: TABE score of 10th grade in math and reading.
    Occupation & Licensure Requirements:

    Admission Requirements:

    Must be 16+ years old to enroll.
    All Adult students must submit HS Transcripts with a C or better in 10th grade or higher, math and reading comprehension, or take the TABE test scoring at a 10th grade reading and math level.

    *Students may transfer in from other electrician apprenticeship programs at the semester break in any of the four years. Confer with instructor prior to enrolling transfer students.

  • What are some examples of skills I will learn?

    Introduction to Electrical Practices

    Students gain a broader understanding of electrical theory along with code requirements for residential wiring, including heating systems, fire alarm and security systems. They will also learn pipe bending during their first semester.

    Electrical Systems, Motors and Conductors

    Students will study concepts including electrical theory as it applies to motors, transformers, and generators. The class reiterates important safety training and students learn about inductance theory, series AC circuits and Three-Phase AC. It prepares students for further understanding of industrial and commercial wiring, and overcurrent protection. Students will also learn appropriate transformer sizing, and motor control circuits and hookups.

    Blueprints, Grounding, Motor and Advanced Controls

    Students will learn fundamentals for reading various trade’s blueprints as well as grounding equipment and conductors.They will gain foundational knowledge and skills relating to motor controls, including the application and installation of these devices. Students will learn time delay and complex line diagrams. Instruction also includes the basics of working with fiber optics.They develop an understanding of motors, controls, air conditioning and refrigeration and will finalize coursework needed in preparation for the journeyman test.
