Tooele Tech’s program gives you hands-on training in everything from precision haircutting to shaving and grooming, plus the personal and business skills you need to build a career.

(archived) Barbering
Students learn techniques and theory of haircutting, hairstyling, shaving, facial and hair design, and scalp and hair treatments. They study about diseases and disorders of skin, hair and scalp, as well as disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures. Students learn use implements, tools and equipment for the Barber, including client and salon safety, and basics of running a business with Barber Shop management concepts.
Barbering students will achieve competencies and proficiency in the following:
- Treatment of the hair and scalp, men’s facial massage and treatments, shaving, and facial hair design.
- Haircutting and hairstyling, and men’s hairpieces.
- Use of the proper tools and implements, disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures, client and salon safety.
- Learn and master State Board regulations and guidelines to be prepared to take and pass State Board written and practical examinations.
Average Program Length: Approximately 1000 hours

Courses can not be taken as individual courses. Students must enroll in the Barbering Program.
- All students must commit to Block 1 – 9:00 to 2:00 pm OR Block 2 – 3:00 to 8:00 pm (CAPACITY: 20 STUDENTS PER BLOCK)
- Adult Students must provide a high school transcript showing a C or better in 8th grade or higher math and reading, and/or take the TABE assessment showing an 8 grade level in reading and math.
- High school students must be in at least the 11th grade.
Other Information helpful for students to understand:
- Prior to student’s doing State Board preparation and taking the State Board practical exam, students may need to purchase additional mannequins (female manikin $34 and male manikin $42 ) – these items can be purchased at the Tooele Tech Bookstore
- Testing Fees: $180 ($90.00 for practical exam and $90.00 for written exam) cost is for a single attempt.
- Tooele Tech does not administer the DOPL test, students must schedule licensing exams through *Provexams directly.
