In 1990, the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA) was amended to include the Crime Awareness and College Security Act of 1990 (Title II of Public Law 101- 542). This amendment required all postsecondary institutions participating in Title IV student financial aid programs to disclose College crime statistics and security information. In 1998, the act was renamed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of College Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act in memory of Jeanne Clery, a university student who was killed in her dorm room in 1986.
