The Cybersecurity Pro program at Tooele Technical College uses the fundamentals taught from the IT and Security Technician program building on the knowledge and skills earned to develop a more advanced Cybersecurity Technician. Students will have the opportunity to earn the following industry certifications: Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Linux +, TestOut Ethical Hacker Pro, TestOut CyberDefense Pro, TestOut Linux Pro, TestOut Server 2016 Install and Configure Pro, TestOut Server 2016 Networking Pro, TestOut Server 2016 Identity Pro, with the potential to earn additional certifications which include, CompTIA SySA+ and possibly CEH certification.

The Cybersecurity program at Tooele Tech gives you a great opportunity to learn the basics of how to repair, maintain and operate computers with different operating systems. Students learn how to secure those computers. They get the opportunity to understand networking theory as well as how to use routers and switches and how to secure those routers and switches. Students also receive more in-depth security training. They understand what different viruses are about, you will understand malware, and ransomware. Students learn how to set up a small home or office, medium sized business, and become an integral part of a larger enterprise system. They get a chance to learn how the hackers try to attack your networks so you may defend them better. After completing the core of the program students will get to specialize in either a Cisco networking environment, and or Windows Server environment, and or the Linux environment specializing in KALI™ Linux. Some of the certifications allow students to be able to earn are TestOut Desktop Pro, TestOut PC Pro, CompTIA’s A+, TestOut Network Pro, CompTIA’s Net+, TestOut Security Pro, CompTIA’s Security +, CompTIA SySA. For the electives certification opportunities, you will have your choice of Cisco CCNA, Windows Server MCSA 2016, CompTIA Linux plus, Kali Linux, or TestOut Ethical Hacker Pro.
Program Objectives
Competencies for the Cybersecurity program include skills that help students learn various aspects of troubleshooting computer hardware and network security problems. Some skills they learn include
- Troubleshooting basic Microsoft Office terminology and programs as well as troubleshooting and repairing a computer’s hardware systems as well as peripheral devices that computers utilize.
- Configuring and troubleshooting different operating systems, Microsoft, iOS, Linux, and Android on PC’s, Laptops, and mobile devices.
- Being able to do limited deployment of virtual machines and protect sensitive data, software and hardware from a variety of threats and risks, internal or external in nature using penetration testing.
- Implementing patch management/system updates.
- Connecting devices together to form a cohesive, functioning and secure LAN network.
- Knowledge of routing and switching protocols and understanding of wireless set-ups and how to secure the network.
- Configuring basic firewall settings for your network and ability to install basic anti-virus protections in hosts and server applications
- Being able to configure systems and remote devices to create and use a VPN connection
- Troubleshooting IP configuration issues, wired, and wireless to establish network communication
- Knowledge of the OSI model and the TCP/IP stack to help understand the troubleshooting process
- Understanding of the WAN Technologies of today and applying access control and identity management
- Knowledge of common security policies, procedures, and awareness
- Theoretical awareness of physical security and applying basic perimeter defenses
- Understanding and configuring of network defenses, host defenses, application defenses, and data defenses
- Applying audits and assessments, promoting Information security awareness and perform system backups and recovery
- Protect data transmissions across open, public networks, Review security logs and violation reports, implement remediation
- Harden the network perimeter (using a Cisco Network Security Appliance)
- Analyze indicators of compromise and determine the type of malware.
- Basic understanding of ethical hacking including legal issues involved.
- Has a solid understanding of what takes place regarding social engineering and physical security
- Able to implement basic countermeasures and remedies when needed
- Understand reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, and analyze vulnerabilities
- Can identify when system hacking is occurring, how Malware invades through numerous sources.
- Understands sniffers, session hijacking, denial of service
- Configure IDS, firewalls, and honey pots
