How It Works

Competency-based means students progress at their own pace through their classes, taking the time that they need to master different skills.  Programs are broken down into courses, and courses are broken down into modules or competencies.  In other words, students work on smaller components of their larger learning goal, and are evaluated on the individual competency.  Once they have mastered the competency, they move on to the next module.

Another benefit of competency-based education is the ability to skip modules entirely if the student can demonstrate they already have mastery. That can be done either through prior learning assessment or testing.
