In the Shielded Metal Arc Welding course, students will learn “stick” welding. They also learn the proper settings on various brands and models of arc welders. Students will learn the basics of metal cutting and setup for various welding positions.
Certificate:Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of basic arc welding based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skills Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Demonstrate the differences in welding with each of the three types of current
- Identify welding machines according to their type
- Demonstrate how to select and set the welding current
- Describe the proper maintenance of SMA welding equipment
- Demonstrate how to safely set up an SMA welding station
- Demonstrate how to control undercut, overlap, porosity, and slag inclusions when SMA welding
- Demonstrate the effect of electrode angle on a weld
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length:The estimated length of this course is 25 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Admission RequirementsStudents must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Also, the Welding Introduction and Safety and Welding, Oxyfuel and Plasma Cutting courses must be completed prior to this course.
