Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of Nursing Care of the Family based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Discuss the steps of the nursing process as they relate to the management of nursing care for maternity, newborn and child health.
- Demonstrate the appropriate communication techniques when providing nursing care for women and children.
- Assume responsibility for expansion of knowledge base in the area of women and child health nursing.
- Evaluate possible legal and ethical issues in the areas of maternity and child nursing.
- Discuss cultural, social, economic and political influences which can impact health and care provided to women and children.
- Integrate knowledge of growth and development with nursing process to develop individualized plans of care for the maternal, newborn, and the pediatric patient.
- Describe common physiologic and psychological processes that occur during each trimester of pregnancy.
- Summarize the phases of growth and development from conception through adolescence using the theories of Freud, Erickson, Piaget, and Kohlberg.
- Define the scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse in the provision of care to the maternal, newborn, and patient.
- Discuss the legal and ethical aspects of providing competent care including his/her responsibility and accountability to act as a patient advocate the provision of care of the maternal, newborn, and pediatric patient.
- Describe leadership techniques that may be used as a manger of care when delegating care or tasks to unlicensed health care personnel.
- Utilize nursing process and critical thinking and personal management skills to provide safe, positive, competent, confidential, and individualized nursing care to the maternal, newborn, and pediatric patient. •Demonstrate the following: physical assessment (data collection), psychosocial assessment and developmental assessment; and incorporate the findings in the management of nursing care of the maternal or child client.
- Apply personal management skills to collect, organize, record, and report pertinent data regarding the maternal, newborn, and pediatric patient’s health status in a timely manner.
- Perform competent nursing and physical assessments understanding the pathophysiological basic conditions identified for the maternal, newborn and pediatric patient.
- Utilize technology to manage knowledge, mitigate errors, and support decision making in maternity, newborn and child health.
- Provide health teaching as appropriate using effective therapeutic communication skills to interact with patients and family members.
- Utilize critical reasoning, role modeling and creativity to meet the needs of women and children with diverse psychosocial, physical and cultural backgrounds in a variety of settings.
This is a competency-based course that has a defined start and end date.
