This didactic and clinical course is designed to present basic concepts for maintaining adequate overall personal and community health. General signs and symptoms of illness, disease processes and disorders are presented. Measures to treat and control, with principles or caring and providing nursing management as well as preventing the disease or spread of the disease. This course expands content regarding nursing as a professional discipline, the theoretical basis for nursing practice, current nursing issues, roles, education, cultural, and ethical and legal issues in the care of patients.
Certificate:Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of Nursing Care of the Adult Patient based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Describe the nursing process to a variety of medical-surgical disorders
- List causes, signs, symptoms, treatments, diagnostic testing and prognosis as well as the nursing care to certain medical-surgical conditions.
- List measures and conditions to prevent diseases in given situations.
- Define what the normal ranges are for given laboratory test results.
- Differentiate the procedures for certain diagnostic tests and what disorders they are used for.
- Prioritize nursing care to manage a patient with multiple medical surgical conditions using evidence based practice.
- Apply the nursing process to evaluate and modify (as appropriate) the individualized plan of care collaboratively with the patient and the health care team.
- Demonstrate knowledge of multiple medical and surgical conditions and associated diagnostic and treatment modalities for patients in acute care and outpatient settings.
- Analyze the interrelationship of the body systems and how medical/surgical conditions affect homeostasis and nursing care.
- Synthesize the components of a nursing care plan using input from the patient and family to develop an individualized plan of care and patient teaching interventions.
- Refine Affective Thinking and Cognitive Thinking when utilizing critical thinking to develop and individualized plan of care.
- Recognize actual and potential ethical dilemmas and recommend a plan of action.
This is a competency-based course that has a defined start and end date.
