This course provides theory and hands-on experience for students on troubleshooting and repair of heavy duty truck air conditioning systems. Instruction covers condensers, check valves, driers, compressors, evaporators, controls, heating and engine cooling systems, operating systems and controls, and refrigerant recovery, recycling, and handling.
Certificate:Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding and mastery of heavy duty HVAC based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Explain the theories behind the operation of the HVAC system
- Identify the components of the HVAC system
- Given a vehicle, demonstrate how to check the oil in a compressor
- Examine the components of different compressor valve constructions
- Describe how to prepare and test the HVAC system and demonstrate proper testing techniques
- Describe the process of evacuating and recycling a vehicle’s refrigerant
- Given an Evacuating/Recycling pump, demonstrate how to properly evacuate an A/C system and how to recharge the system and ensure it works properly
- Identify electrical components and read wiring diagrams of HVAC systems
- Given an R12 system, explain how to retrofit it to an R134a system
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length:The estimated length of this course is 120 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Admission Requirements
Student must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Also, the Heavy Duty Diesel Safety and Shop Skills course must be completed prior to this course.
