This course is Gas Tungsten Arc Welding where students learn “TIG” welding, also known as Tungsten Inert Gas welding. They also learn the proper settings on various brands and models of arc welders. Students will learn the techniques for setup for various welding positions and how to weld steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
Certificate:Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of TIG welding tools and techniques based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skills Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Describe the purposes of the various tungsten types and shapes
- Demonstrate the proper method of reshaping tungsten
- Describe the functions of different shielding gases
- Demonstrate how to correctly set up a GTA welding machine
- Demonstrate the effect of alloy oxides on the performance of tungsten
- Demonstrate how to set the correct amperage for each type and size of tungsten
- Demonstrate how to set the correct gas flow times and rates
- Demonstrate proper GTA welding torch manipulation techniques
- Demonstrate a variety of GTA welds in different positions
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length:The estimated length of this course is 190 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Admission RequirementsStudents must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Also, the Welding Introduction and Safety and Welding, Oxyfuel and Plasma Cutting courses must be completed prior to this course.
