This course has three focus areas:
- The urinary system and the functions and structure of the kidney. Students will learn how the bladder functions and the many tests done with urine. These tests can reveal diseases of the bladder or kidneys, systemic metabolic or endocrine disorders.
- The male and female reproduction systems. You will learn the basic anatomy and physiology of the renal male reproductive system. You will learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system. You will study pregnancy and labor. You will learn about the signs and symptoms of disease in the reproductive systems and their treatment.
- The neurological system, the brain’s anatomy and the neurological disorders and diseases of the nervous system. It also deals with the physiology of the nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, symptoms and diagnosing procedures.
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the urologic, reproductive and neurology examinations based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs: Competencies (skills you will learn):- Understand the vocabulary and terminology used in urology
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
- How to administer tests including routine UA and pregnancy tests
- Understand the diagnostic process and treatment of urinary problems
- Properly perform patient education for the urologic system
- Understand the vocabulary and terminology and anatomy and physiology of reproductive systems
- Understand diagnosis and treatment for the reproductive systems
- Properly perform patient education for treatment of the reproductive systems
- Understand the vocabulary and terminology used in neurology
- Understand the symptoms, diagnosing, testing and treatment, such as EMG/NCV, MRI and venipunctures
- Proper sterile tray setups for sterile injections, procedures, EEG testing and lumbar puncture assistance
- Properly perform patient education for the neurologic system
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length:The estimated length of this course is 45 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Students must be at least 16 years old and matriculated in the Clinical Medical Assistant program.

Tuition & Fees:Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
